We are Rick and Deb, two retired travellers from Canada who started living our dream of travelling full-time in 2017. Our plan was to stay months in each place we went to really experience the local culture, and then move on.
We added this travel blog to the mix to share our adventures and inspire people our age (and all ages) to travel to experience adventure, to challenge themselves, to learn, and to appreciate the value of other cultures. By travelling, we believe we better understand other people and ourselves. We hope to inspire through our photos and stories of people, cultures, landscapes, and general beauty in this world.
We have challenged ourselves by going to out-of-the-way places for out-of-the-ordinary experiences.
During a three month stay in Ronda, Spain, we fell in love with a mega-cute glitch in our plans, a Scottish Terrier named Maggie Mae, and we asked her to join us. Travelling full-time on a budget was a challenge, and it became even more so with 10 kg of dog. We have established a home base now in the lovely medieval city of Lucca, Tuscany. From here we continue to be retired travellers.
So yes, a Scottish Terrier, born in Spain, is living in Italy with two Canadians. We wouldn’t have it any other way.
Bio’s
Rick is passionate about food, wine, beer and sports; he does most of the cooking. One of his favourite sayings is “I eat everything.” Rick is our photographer, so we feature his photos in the blog. As a former software developer, Rick does the tech support for our website too.
Deb loves animals and loves to help people. She does the writing and most of the Instagram and Facebook posts, so animals are a recurring theme in our blog. Deb’s background is in business and non-profit management. In preparation for travelling on a budget, Deb became a qualified English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher so she could pick up teaching opportunities.
Maggie is passionate about chin scratches, treats, lizards, and geckos.
Credit for our logo goes to our nephew, Mateo Brady, who was seven years old at the time! He has to update it some day to include Maggie Mae.
Sadly, we had to put down our rambunctious Jack Russell Terrier named “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” in April 2019. It was a tough decision. Jack developed pancreatic cancer and was suffering. At 13 years of age, with failing eyesight and hearing too, it was the right decision. We miss you little buddy. 😢
