30 Beautiful Alhambra Photos

Alhambra

The Alhambra and the Generalife make up a huge complex of palaces, monuments and gardens in Granada, Spain. The Alhambra was originally a small fortress built on the remains of Roman fortifications. The fortress was converted into a royal palace by the Nasrid rulers in the 14th century. It was expanded during those years of Islamic rule in Spain.

Generalife was originally built in the 13th century as the summer palace and country estate of the Nasrid rulers. It includes a large garden complex.

The Granada War ended in 1491 with the Treaty of Granada. The war eliminated the last Islamic foothold on the Iberian peninsula and ended the Reconquista. The entire Iberian peninsula was now under Christian rule. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella forced the Muslims out of Granada in 1492 unless they agreed to convert to Christianity. The Alhambra became the royal court of Ferdinand and Isabella, so the palaces were modified further, but in the Renaissance style. Christopher Columbus received royal assent at Alhambra for his expeditions to America.
